At the same time, he fears that any excellence means the beginning of abnormality, exclusion from society. The mysterious aura of the ancient Christian legend of the Black Monk's existence brings a welcome partner into Kovrin's fractured world, a reflection of his secret desires. Eventually Kovrin comes to believe in his unique destiny to be the chosen one and to do good. In a sudden euphoria, he unthinkingly marries Tanya, a simple country girl. However, the "good" deed eventually becomes a burden for Kovrin...
