On the eve of the PLA's launch of the cross-river campaign, Kuomintang battalion commander Huang Huai'en led his troops to retreat to the south of the Yangtze River at the Chu's Ferry where it was stationed. During that evening, He Hua met with Liu ZhenShan, the leader of the People's Liberation Army who came to investigate, and fell in love at first sight.
